5. Ponytail: The last time we saw these Baltimore heroes was at the Yard in Brooklyn over a year ago, playing an energetic, yet scrappy set of songs. 365 days later, that same scrappy set has turned into a powerful punch of yelping jams. Is their next album is anything like their new songs, getting ready for next year’s band of the year.

4. Beirut: One of our two BK highlights, the band brought their Baltic sound to an adoring crowd. Accordion rhythms balanced with a full horn section backed Zach Condon’s pitch perfect lyrics. While the entire band was engaging, we couldn’t help but feel warmed up by the drummer’s never ending smile.

3. Grizzly Bear: Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, these other BK heroes just put out the best album of the year. Despite a few technical difficulties, the boys played hit after hit (does the new album even have any deep cuts?!) to a sing along crowd. Let’s be honest, with the way they are going, they will continue to play in front of crowds this size for the years to come.

2. Killer Whales: Let us set the scene: It was Sunday. Everyone was hungover. The blue line was only running a bus shuttle. And everyone got the festival late. After grabbing the initial beer, most of us moseyed on over to the B stage for the widely unknown Killer Whales. About two songs in, everyone started leaning over to the person next them and asked “who the hell are these guys?” Truth is we still have been too busy to figure out who they are, but we know they are from Chicago and we know they are gonna be huge. Seriously, we are calling right now (ps don’t implode from the internet hype).

1. M83: It’s real simple: if you missed M83’s perfect performance on Sunday, you blew it. The sun was setting, the beats were unstoppable and the feeling was just right. From the opening melodies of Graveyard Girl to the disco-dance ending of Kim and Jessie to the epic close of Couleurs, it was nothing short of bliss. Also, the keyboard player’s dance off with the crowd with the highlight of the entire festival (kidding / sort of).
So there it is! We will be back next year, no doubt.
(PS If anyone has a recording ot the M83 set, please let us know!)
